The township has an area of 13.34 Km². There are several gullies, as the ones of the Obaga Valley, the Font Nova Valley, or the Socarrats Valley. They drain the land that is very irregular and is broken down by a set of hills of slate. The village of Gratallops is at a height of 321 metres, and it is the only inhabited place of the township. |

Almost half of the surface remains unproductive, and is occupied by pasture lands, forest and thicket. The irrigated lands occupy the 2% of the cultivated lands. The vineyard, although it has suffered an important decrease in the last years, is still the most important crop, and it is followed in degree of importance by the almond and the olive trees. The cereals and the hazel tress have almost disappeared. The Agricultural Cooperative was founded in 1917, under the name of "Sindicat Agrícola Priorat d'Escaladei". Nowadays, the Cooperative bottles the wine of the "Denominació d'origen Piorat" (a quality qualification), under the technical and commercial direction of the "Unió Agrària Cooperativa", in all its varieties, as red, rosé, mellow and communion. They are extremely good, of an extraordinary quality. There are also some private wine cellars that make wine for being
traded. As a complement of the households, some people work in the cattle grazing of animals, specially pigs and poultry farms. During the 19th.century, before the damage that the phylloxera caused, Gratallops had been one of the richest villages of the county. Nowadays, although the strong emigration ant the agricultural crisis, the men of Gratallops keep doing an effort to maintain a hopeful vitality. |
